For many years I’ve been buying store bought almond milk out of convenince but lately I have really been wanting to make my own! I have always heard it wasn’t very difficult, but it just always seemed more practical to buy it at the grocery store, even though I knew that meant I was consuming a product with more added ingredients!

Keep in mind, most carton nut milks do contain added sugars (to sweeten it), natural flavors (which are exactly the same as artificial flavors except they come from substances found in nature),  gums ( such as carrageenan or guar gum which is used to thicken the milk- this can cause bloating or upset stomachs), and sadly they don’t contain many nuts at all.

Now, w hen it comes to choosing the cleanest brand of Almond Milk, I try and go with brands like Malk, Newbarn, and when I’m in a pinch I’ll get Califa Farms. These brands contain very few ingredients and are better than most of the other leading brands out there.

Now getting back to the homemade stuff… I finally decided to give it a try! Ummmm, and I seriously had to ask myself, “Why have I waited so dang long to make my own Homemade Almond Milk??” It tastes so fresh, nutty and creamy. You would absolutely be able to tell the difference immediately, if comparing store bought to homemade. I still can’t get over how surprisingly simple it was to make, too!

Heres how you make it:

First, you will need to soak 1 cup of raw almonds over night in water. Then, once they have soaked overnight, you will want to drain the water and rinse the almonds off. Next, you’ll add 4 cups of filtered water to your high speed blender, along with 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract, 1/2 t sea salt, and 1-2 tbsp of raw honey or dates (depending on preference). * Adding the sweetener is optional. Then, you’ll blend on high speed for about 2 mins until the consistency looks creamy and frothy!

Once you’ve finished blending them, you’ll want to use a large bowl and a nut milk bag/cheese cloth, I used this Nut Milk Bag, to pour the almond milk into. Then you’ll squeeze out all of the liquid from the bag and until all that is left in the bag is the almond pulp.

Lastly, you’ll want to pour the milk into glass sealed jar, using either a funnel or you can pour it back into your blender and pour it from there. Then you will store it in the fridge for up to 5 days.
